Tinder mushrooms Pyrofomes juniperinus (Inonotus juniperinus(?)) on a red cedar tree in Old Independence Cemetery near Independence. Texas
Album 2447: Independence Cemetery, Texas, February 10, 2019
The image features a close-up view of two Tinder mushrooms growing on a tree trunk. The fungi have a flat, roundish shape with an irregular edge and are covered in fine hairs or fibers that resemble velvet. They appear to be attached to the tree by a thin stem at their base.
The tree itself is red cedar, as indicated by the caption, but its precise variety cannot be determined from this image alone. The trunk of the tree has been weathered by time and displays prominent cracks in some areas. These cracks may have allowed the fungi to grow on the surface of the tree rather than within it.
The overall appearance suggests that the mushrooms are part of a larger network of fungi growing on or near the red cedar tree, possibly even connected by their stems if they are not entirely separate organisms. The image provides a detailed view of these fascinating organisms and highlights their unique characteristics and adaptations for growth in this environment.
– Spanish translation
