Close up of green crust fungus Trichoderma viride under a ...

The image is a close-up photograph showing a green crust fungus known as Trichoderma viride growing on a fallen oak tree at Lake Somerville Trailway near Birch Creek Unit of Somerville Lake State Park in Texas.

This fungus appears to be growing in several patches over the surface of the wood, where it has been broken apart by rot or insect damage. The green crust is visible as small irregularly shaped clumps of growth on the wood's surface. The fungal mycelium is white and fine, but not readily apparent in this image.

The wooden log appears to have dark brown bark that has started to fall off at the top of the photograph, exposing a lighter-brown inner layer of the tree trunk. Several vertical cracks are visible through the wood, which may allow water or insects to enter the trunk. The overall appearance suggests that this fallen oak tree is in various stages of decay and rot.
