Lick Creek: Background Notes
History, ecology, and field observations from Lick Creek Park, College Station, Texas.
Part I – Orientation and intent
Why this park, why this story
Lick Creek Park is the place where I have walked often enough that the trails have turned into a chronology rather than a map: Iron Bridge Trail after an ice storm, Deer Run Trail disappearing into fog, Post Oak Trail surrounded by wet prairie grasses and seasonal flowers. Over many years those walks have accumulated into thousands of dated observations—“Beautyberry near Deer Run Trail… September 16, 2007,” “Spider web near Deer Run Trail… September 29, 2007,” “Snowy inkcap mushrooms growing on horse dung… October 17, 2007” and hundreds of similar captions that mark time as precisely as a field log.
Because of this density of visits, the park is no longer just a recreational space but a local field site where I can watch small shifts: the way sewage‑line right‑of‑way looks after ice, in mist, at sunrise, and in rain; how the same Post Oak Trail alternates between spring wildflowers, summer seed heads, and winter grass stems. The story I want to write grows out of this long series of ordinary walks and photographs, and is aimed at details that tend to remain in captions, herbarium notes, council minutes, and web archives rather than in tourist guides or promotional brochures.
Sources and constraints
The narrative is based on a mixture of materials that rarely appear together: municipal documents about land purchases and annexation, recollections from the 2023 Gary Halter Nature Center dedication, archaeological and ecological reports, the Texas A&M Herbarium’s field‑trip guide to Lick Creek Park, an archived insect and arachnid inventory, and my own dated picture captions from two decades of walking the park. I intend to treat these as working notes rather than authority statements, using them to reconstruct specific episodes and ecological structures while avoiding promotional language and general declarations about “beauty” or “amenities.”
The text will be written without embedded photographs, even though most of the observations originate from images, because selecting a small set out of more than eight thousand files would impose a different and time‑consuming editorial task. Instead, the story is meant to stand on its own as a document that can be linked from photo galleries and other pages, offering readers who encounter a caption about a dew‑covered phlox or a foggy sewage right‑of‑way a path back to the less visible historical and biological context of the place.
Part II – Physical setting and habitats
Topography and hydrology
Lick Creek Park occupies the southeastern corner of College Station, draped across the valley walls and floodplain of Lick Creek and the smaller Alum Creek. Lick Creek is a tributary of the Navasota River, and the park includes both the higher slopes that descend toward the creek and the low ground where floodwaters spread, leaving a patchwork of oxbows and wet depressions.
Within this area the main creek channel, abandoned oxbow meadows, and marshy flats form a hydrologic spine that controls where particular plant communities and soils occur. The presence of the Lick Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant immediately south of the park adds another layer: sewer lines were originally trenched toward the plant before formal trails were laid out, and more recently a new trunk line and associated corridors have been cut across the park to serve an expanded facility.
Vegetation zones
Because the park has not been heavily drained or leveled, several Post Oak Savannah vegetation types sit side by side: well‑developed riverine and alluvial hardwood forest along parts of Lick Creek, open marshland and oxbow meadows in low areas, upland oak forest on drier slopes, and sandy prairies on higher, more porous soils. The Herbarium field‑trip materials treat these as distinct stops—open savannah, sandy wildflower patches, wet sedge meadows, and closed woods—reflecting fine‑scale differences in moisture, soil texture, and canopy structure that are evident when walking short distances along a single trail.
Superimposed on these older patterns are utility/right‑of‑way strips associated with wastewater lines and other public utilities. A resolution adopted in 2019 formally established public utility corridors through portions of Lick Creek Park and adjacent Pebble Creek parkland for the Lick Creek Wastewater Trunkline project, acknowledging that certain park sections would be used for buried lines and access while attempting to minimize harm. The corridor described in planning documents is on the order of 30 feet wide permanently, with additional temporary width for construction, and it follows a path from Wm. D. Fitch Parkway toward the treatment plant that intersects existing trails such as Raccoon Run and Deer Run. As a result, the present habitat mosaic now includes strips of periodically cleared, reseeded ground where vegetation and soil compaction differ noticeably from adjacent savannah and forest.
Part III – Early land use before the park
Indigenous presence along the terraces
Long before the city acquired what is now Lick Creek Park, the same slopes and floodplain supported repeated Native American use over thousands of years. Intensive archaeological survey has identified at least four prehistoric sites—41BZ141, 41BZ144, 41BZ145, and 41BZ146—clustered along terrace edges overlooking Lick and Alum Creeks rather than on the modern floodplain itself. These sites consist mainly of chert flakes, tested cobbles, cores, and one early-stage biface, with almost no finished tools, a pattern consistent with lithic procurement and initial stone‑tool reduction at natural outcrops of sandstone and chert on the terrace slopes.
The survey notes that deer, rabbits, and at times bison, along with bulbs and corms of lily and iris family plants—yellow star grass, blue‑eyed grass, copper lily, spring beauty, false garlic—would have formed the main food resources in this section of the Post Oak Savannah. Charred nut and root remains from nearby Brazos Valley sites show that similar plant foods were used locally for at least several thousand years, while chipped‑stone projectile points and hearths in the region indicate habitation extending back 12,000 years, even though the Lick Creek terrace sites themselves lack diagnostic artifacts that would pin down more precise dates. All of the prehistoric loci in the park lie in positions that match ethnohistoric observations that Indigenous encampments were often found on terraces and gentle slopes above tributary streams rather than directly on the floodplain.
Ranching, cultivation, and roads in the historic era
People of European and African ancestry began settling around what is now College Station in the mid‑19th century, displacing local Indigenous groups and converting most uplands—including the future park—to pasture. By the late 1800s many of the prairie patches were plowed for crops, but the sandy soils were quickly depleted; fields were then returned to pasture so that by the 1950s most of the uplands again served as grazing land for cattle and horses. Rock Prairie Road, which now forms the park’s northern boundary, has been in use for at least a century, and older aerial photographs and field evidence show other roads running through the tract, including approaches to two iron bridges over Lick and Alum Creeks in the southwestern corner.
Small farmsteads and tenant houses
Within the park three historic sites—41BZ142, 41BZ143, and 41BZ147—mark modest rural occupations between the late 19th century and the mid‑20th century, all now reduced to low structural traces and scattered artifacts. Site 41BZ147, near the present entrance, is essentially a stock pond and dam with a heavily patched sandstone‑and‑brick spillway; only a buried sandstone pier, a few cut nails, “purple” glass fragments, and whiteware sherds remain of the associated homesite visible on a 1940 aerial photograph. Site 41BZ142, along Rock Prairie Road, corresponds to a farmstead whose buildings had been removed by the time of the survey; artifacts are spread across an open clearing and adjacent trees, with larger items to one side (interpreted as barn or workshed debris) and smaller kitchen midden material on the other, plus a central depression that may once have held a cistern.
Site 41BZ143 lies in an upland clearing above Lick Creek and preserves the best structural evidence: sandstone foundation piers for two small buildings, a sandstone hearth floor and collapsed chimney, and a nearby hand‑dug stock tank. The small size of the foundations and the limited artifact assemblage—cut nails, whiteware, “purple” glass—led the investigators to interpret 41BZ143 as a tenant‑farmer homestead rather than a large owner‑occupied farm, while 41BZ142 and 41BZ147 probably represent more substantial but now largely erased farm operations. None of the historic sites retain enough intact structures or stratified deposits to qualify as State Archaeological Landmarks, yet together they document a sequence of ordinary uses—pasture, small‑scale cultivation, tenant housing, stock ponds and minor roads—that underlies the later decision to treat the tract as “undeveloped” parkland.
Part IV – Land deals, plans, and failed projects
City purchase and certificates of obligation
In June 1981 the city manager announced that College Station was about to purchase about 1,266 acres south of town, part of a larger 2,500‑acre tract owned by three Houston lawyers. The purpose was not a park but an industrial and research complex, plus room for future city facilities such as a cemetery and a landfill. To finance the acquisition, the city issued roughly $285,000 in certificates of obligation as a down payment and followed with almost $1.3 million in additional non‑competitive certificates, a mechanism that bypasses direct voter approval and therefore carries political risk if the project later proves controversial. At the time the tract lay about two miles south of the city limits, accessible only by a heavily rutted dirt road—now Rock Prairie Road—where driving at normal speed risked damaging a car’s suspension.
Private purchase and joint industrial plan
Before the city formally moved, local realtor Bob Spearman had already bought about 1,030 acres of the same tract. When he learned of the city’s interest, he approached officials to arrange a joint development agreement so that his holdings and the city’s could be planned together as a single industrial/research park. Early concept plans treated almost the entire area as light industrial and research land, with only one residential component and a central green feature intended to make the project more attractive.
Golf‑course and hotel scheme that collapsed
The central feature was a proposed golf course with an associated hotel, promoted by a developer referred to in later accounts as Jack or JEC Developers. The idea was straightforward: a high‑profile golf course, fronted by celebrities, would provide what planners called “sizzle” for investors and corporations considering sites in the new research park, with the hotel positioned to serve visiting executives and conferences. The developers reportedly planned to put in on the order of $15–20 million, but the project failed for structural reasons rather than because of local opposition.
Within a year of the city’s purchase, Texas A&M announced its own research park elsewhere, immediately diverting much of the anticipated demand for research‑oriented industrial acreage. With the university’s park absorbing the tenant base that the Lick Creek site was intended to attract, the large tract was no longer required as a full‑scale industrial hub, and the golf‑course/hotel scheme became economically untenable; Jack/JEC Developers withdrew, and Spearman sold his portion of the land to another entity.
Bill Fitch and the Pebble Creek exchange
The next major rearrangement came when developer Bill Fitch, already responsible for the 2,000‑acre Southwood Valley subdivision, saw residential potential in the failed industrial tract. Fitch bought out the developers’ holdings and negotiated a land swap with the city: College Station transferred 677 acres of its land to Fitch, while receiving in exchange about 200 acres fronting Highway 6, both parcels appraised at $3 million despite the difference in acreage.
Fitch’s combined holdings—his original purchase plus the 677 acres from the city—formed the basis of what became the Pebble Creek golf‑course community, roughly 1,500 acres of residential development adjacent to the remaining city land. The city’s new Highway 6 frontage parcel was reserved for industrial and municipal facilities, and early discussions still mentioned potential cemetery and landfill sites, though subsequent analysis showed that high water tables and flooding made those uses impractical on much of the ground.
Land set‑aside and the park that emerged from failure
The 1,266‑acre tract acquired in 1981 thus fragmented: substantial portions became Pebble Creek, other parts were reserved for industrial frontage and the Lick Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant, and approximately 515–523 acres in the southeastern part were eventually set aside by council as a natural area. Lick Creek Park’s establishment in 1987 can be read as a by‑product of this sequence of failed or reconfigured projects—an industrial research park eclipsed by the university’s own park, a golf‑course complex that never materialized, and cemetery and landfill concepts that proved incompatible with local hydrology—rather than as the outcome of a straightforward park‑planning process.
Part V – Dogs, does, orchids, and annexation
Highway 6 accidents and the orchid constraint
When the city bought the land south of town, one of the pressing infrastructure problems was Highway 6, then a two‑lane road where Mayor Gary Halter recalled a series of serious accidents. The highway needed widening, but the Texas Department of Transportation declined to proceed because an endangered orchid, the Navasota ladies’‑tresses (Spiranthes parksii), was growing in the right‑of‑way. The road project stalled until botanists found another population of the orchid at the back of the Lick Creek tract, in an area not yet subject to construction.
An arrangement was negotiated: if the city would permanently protect about forty acres of ground where the newly discovered orchids occurred, then TxDOT would be allowed to widen Highway 6 without violating federal endangered‑species rules. The orchid reserve thus emerged not from a conventional conservation planning process but from a specific regulatory obstruction—road widening blocked by plant protection—that was solved by relocating the protected population to city‑owned land and obligating that land to remain a nature area.
Exclusive police hunting rights and “does”
In the years immediately after the city’s purchase, the land was not opened to the general public; instead, access was limited to the College Station Police Department, who held approximately forty doe permits for hunting within the tract. Halter later described the area at that time as an open savannah with scattered oaks, fewer shrubs than today, and abundant deer, in sharp contrast to the present situation in which he has gone years without seeing a single deer on his walks.
The fact that a city‑owned property on the edge of town functioned primarily as an exclusive hunting ground for police officers is rarely mentioned in public accounts of the park’s origin. It demonstrates that for a period the tract was treated as a kind of closed backlot—legally accessible only to one department—rather than as future parkland, despite the concurrent pressure to treat part of it as orchid habitat to satisfy highway‑widening requirements.
Mayor ordered off his own land
One of the more striking anecdotes from the 2023 dedication concerns a day when Halter was out in the tract with his dog, a golden retriever named Dorothy, walking along ranch roads and savannah slopes. A police officer who did not recognize him confronted him and ordered him off the property, explaining that only officers with permits were allowed there. Halter recalls that at the time the police possessed about forty doe permits for the area and considered themselves the sole legitimate users.
Halter later cited this incident as a key moment in his thinking: if the land remained de facto reserved for one department’s recreational use, then other residents would never gain access to the same open space. The episode did not itself change policy, but it added a personal dimension to his existing interest in protecting natural areas, reinforcing his argument that the tract should become a nature park available to all residents rather than a restricted hunting ground.
One‑foot annexation strip down Highway 6
When Halter and city manager North Bardell began to push for the land to be brought formally into the city, they encountered a legal constraint: under state law, territory had to be contiguous with existing city limits to be annexed. The tract lay about two miles south of the boundary, separated by highway and rural land, so a straightforward annexation was impossible.
Their solution was administrative rather than physical. The city annexed a one‑foot‑wide strip of property along the centerline of Highway 6, running from the existing city boundary down to the Lick Creek tract. With that narrow ribbon legally in place, the tract became contiguous with the city and could be annexed, clearing the way for later decisions to designate part of it as park land and part as utility sites. This maneuver—rarely described in tourist or interpretive materials—illustrates how a combination of endangered orchids, hunting permits, and careful use of annexation rules jointly shaped the conditions under which Lick Creek Park could exist.
Part VI – Council debates and slow emergence of a park
Political climate and criticism
When Halter pushed for the city to buy the 1,266‑acre tract south of town and later to treat part of it as park land, he did so in front of what he describes as a “very fiscally conservative council” whose main priority was keeping the tax rate low. The land lay two miles outside the city boundary, reachable only by a deeply rutted dirt road where one drove five miles an hour to avoid damaging car springs, and there was no obvious short‑term reason for such a remote tract to become a park. Council issued certificates of obligation without voter approval to finance the purchase, a step Crompton notes “takes a great deal of courage” because it can backfire if the electorate later concludes that the money was spent on a speculative project.
As criticism accumulated, it focused on the absence of paved access, the lack of immediate facilities, and the perception that buying land for parks was a luxury rather than a necessity. Halter recalls that council members “were pretending to be Ronald Reagan part of the time,” a shorthand for a political mood skeptical of public spending on amenities beyond core infrastructure. Against that background, the idea of reserving hundreds of acres as a nature park met resistance not only on financial grounds but also because many members could not yet see the tract as anything other than future development land.
The staged van tour with temporary fields
When Halter first proposed the park concept, initial reactions reportedly included “no tennis courts, no ballparks, no soccer fields,” indicating that colleagues were willing to support conventional sports facilities but not an undeveloped nature area. To make the land legible in familiar terms, he persuaded the council to take a tour: they borrowed a van from the mayor of Bryan, drove out along the rough road, and had Parks staff set up temporary signs across the tract marking locations for hypothetical ball fields and soccer fields.
The tour did not immediately generate funding for actual sports complexes, but it helped shift the conversation away from an abstract debate about remote acreage toward a concrete discussion of how the land might be used. In the end the council agreed to designate a substantial portion—around 515–523 acres—as park land at a purchase price of about $1,250 per acre, a figure Crompton later contrasted with the \$35,000 per acre the city paid for a much smaller west‑side regional park decades afterward.
From designation to slow development
Even after the park was formally set aside, little happened on the ground for years; Halter notes that “nothing much happened to it for years… in terms of development.” Trails were not immediately constructed, and public awareness remained limited; informal use by a small group of residents and staff gradually increased, but the park did not yet have the infrastructure or interpretive materials that would make it visible to the wider population.
Later, when Halter served on the Parks Board, a more deliberate development phase began. John Crompton played a central role in planning and laying out the present trail system, turning former ranch roads and new paths into named routes such as Deer Run, Iron Bridge, and Post Oak. Even then, changes were incremental rather than dramatic, and Halter’s description of being “always amazed” at how many people were using the park on weekends reflects a transition from a barely noticed tract to a widely used, though still relatively low‑profile, natural area.
Debates over the nature center building
The building now known as the Gary Halter Nature Center was itself the subject of extended council debate. Halter recalls that the proposal for any facility on the site encountered strong opposition from people who did not want development of this kind and preferred that the land be left in a completely natural state. For some, a structure with meeting rooms and exhibits seemed to risk turning the park into a managed attraction rather than a simple open space.
Over time, proponents succeeded in framing the facility as support for education and interpretation rather than as an intrusion, and the building was eventually approved and constructed. The debates left traces in the final design: the center is relatively small, with an outdoor classroom and native plant displays rather than large entertainment features, and its later renaming in 2022 to honor Halter underscores the connection between the building and the earlier political work that made the park possible in the first place.
Part VII – Plant communities and field‑trip botany
Overview of habitats
The park’s plant communities are organized along the valley walls and floodplain of Lick Creek, within the Post Oak Savannah vegetation zone. Within about 500 acres, the field‑trip materials describe well‑developed riverine and alluvial hardwood forest, open marshland, oxbow meadows, upland oak forest, and sandy prairies, a combination made possible in part because the area has not been heavily drained or leveled.
Open areas and savannah
Near the entrance and equestrian parking lot, regularly mowed open ground supports a mixture of native species and common introduced weeds, reflecting management rather than purely natural processes. Beyond the mowed zone, open savannah with scattered post oaks (Quercus stellata) appears: trees with crooked branches, irregular crowns, and substantial dead wood in the canopy, underlain by spring herbs such as chickweed (Stellaria media), spring beauty (Claytonia virginica), crow poison (Nothoscordum bivalve), buttercups (Ranunculus), peppergrass (Lepidium virginicum), winecups (Callirhoe involucrata), buffalo bur (Solanum rostratum), and Mexican hat (Ratibida columnifera).
Sandy prairies and allergy plants
In a notably sandy patch south of the parking area, the guide points out Drummond sandwort (Arenaria drummondii) and pointed phlox (Phlox cuspidata), noting that wide sweeps of purple and white phlox are a reliable indicator of sandy soils. Other sand‑adapted species include dwarf dandelion (Krigia cespitosa), while the edges host wind‑pollinated composites such as marsh‑elder (Iva annua) and western ragweed (Ambrosia psilostachya), identified as major contributors to local hay fever; goldenrod (Solidago spp.), often blamed, is described as insect‑pollinated and usually not a major allergen.
Upland and mesic woods
Moving into closed canopy, the field‑trip chapters distinguish upland oak forest from more mesic woods, each with its own characteristic understory. Upland stands on drier soils carry post oaks and associated species adapted to lower moisture, while mesic woods nearer creeks and depressions contain a different assemblage of hardwoods and shade‑tolerant herbs, echoing broader ecological descriptions of Lick Creek Park’s divisions into upland savannah, mesic slopes, and floodplain forest.
Utility right‑of‑way and sedge meadow
One stop along the route is the utility right‑of‑way, where periodic clearing for lines produces a corridor flora dominated by disturbance‑tolerant species distinct from adjacent savannah or woods. Another stop is a sedge meadow and nearby wet depressions, where bright buttercups and other hydrophilic plants occupy shallow, seasonally saturated soils away from the main creek channel, providing a small but diverse wetland component within the broader savannah context.
Creekside and oxbow vegetation
The guide’s later chapters turn to Lick Creek itself, describing riverine and alluvial hardwood forest, open marshland, and oxbow meadows that arise where the creek has abandoned parts of its former course. These habitats mark the downstream end of the field trip and complete the gradient from roadside disturbance through savannah and sandy patches to closed woodland and floodplain, with particular species and structural features used to define each zone.
Part VIII – Fungal communities and hidden networks
Macrofungi across habitats and seasons
My observations of fungi in Lick Creek Park range from small inkcaps on mulch to large porcini in forest openings, showing how different habitats and microhabitats support distinct assemblages. Early records include snowy inkcap mushrooms (Coprinopsis nivea) growing directly on horse dung along Deer Run Trail, a reminder that some saprobic fungi exploit transient nutrient sources in heavily used areas. Later series from 2018 and 2020 document waves of bolete and milkcap fruiting in upland oak woods, swampy patches near Raccoon Run Trail, mowed paths, and small dry creek banks, indicating that fungal activity is strongly tied to soil moisture pulses and host tree distribution.
Mycorrhizal partners of oaks and other trees
Many of the recorded fungi are ectomycorrhizal associates of oaks and other hardwoods. Porcini bolete mushrooms of the Boletus edulis group fruit in small forest openings and under oaks along Closed Trail and near Iron Bridge Trail, while spotted boletes (Xanthoconium affine), pallid boletes (Boletus pallidus), and various Leccinellum species appear in nearby understory and bushy patches. Milkcap mushrooms in several taxa—Lactarius psammicola, Lactarius rimosellus, Lactarius indigo, Lactarius areolatus, and members of Lactarius subgenus Plinthogalus—occur under small oaks, along creek slopes, and in mossy ground, suggesting multiple mycorrhizal links between these fungi and the Post Oak Savannah tree layer. Amanita species, including white warty mushrooms (Amanita sect. Validae) and Amanita texasorora, also appear under oaks, providing further evidence that the park’s woody plants are embedded in complex fungal networks that are only partly visible when fruiting bodies emerge.
Saprobic and parasitic fungi in disturbed sites
Other observations highlight saprobes and parasites in more disturbed settings. Pleated inkcap (Parasola plicatilis), goldenhaired inkcap (Parasola auricoma), and small brittlestems (Psathyrella) occur on mulch and mowed paths, exploiting organic matter in maintained areas. Brittle cinder fungus (Kretzschmaria deusta) appears at the base of an oak tree, illustrating slow structural decay of woody tissue, while golden reishi (Ganoderma curtisii) fruits at the base of a dry honey locust tree with younger brackets on surrounding soil, marking a localized decomposition process. In wet ditches, inflorescences of green flatsedge (Cyperus virens) are enveloped by the fungus Balansia cyperi, showing that plant–fungus interactions extend beyond trees and conspicuous mushrooms to grasses and sedges in minor drainage features.
Small fungi and microscopic networks
The record also includes tiny violet webcaps (Cortinarius bibulus), orange mosscap mushrooms (Rickenella fibula), mold fungus Syzygites megalocarpus colonizing turquoise brittlegills (Russula subgraminicolor), and frost‑white funnels (Leucocybe candicans) on mowed grassy paths. Many of these fruiting bodies are small and ephemeral, but they indicate a background layer of fungal biomass and interaction that persists between visible flushes. Together, the macrofungal observations suggest that beneath the savannah, woods, sedge meadows, and utility corridors described earlier lies a dense set of mutualistic, saprobic, and parasitic relationships that contribute significantly to soil processes and plant community structure, even though they are mostly inferred from scattered appearances of fruiting bodies along trails.
Part IX – Insects and arachnids
Orders present and inventories
A locality‑specific web resource titled “Insects and Arachnids of Lick Creek Park, College Station, Texas” lists virtually all major arthropod orders recorded from the park: scorpions, spiders, harvestmen, mites and ticks, springtails, mayflies, dragonflies and damselflies, grasshoppers and crickets, walkingsticks, earwigs, stoneflies, lice, web‑spinners, termites, mantids, cockroaches, true bugs, cicadas and hoppers, aphids and scales, thrips, booklice, beetles, lacewings and antlions, sawflies, ants, bees and wasps, caddisflies, butterflies and moths, and fleas. The page functions as an index to more detailed inventories—most notably an illustrated list of spiders and a multi‑section monograph on beetles—that treat Lick Creek Park as a defined sampling unit rather than as a generic reference locality.
Spiders
The spider inventory catalogs numerous families and species with status noted as “confirmed,” ranging from trapdoor spiders and ghost spiders to orb‑weavers, wolf spiders, jumping spiders, crab spiders, cobweb weavers, and pirate spiders. Species such as Loxosceles reclusa (brown recluse), Argiope aurantia (yellow garden spider), Nephila clavipes (golden silk orb‑weaver), and a long list of less conspicuous taxa are associated with specific microhabitats, indicating that the park’s savannah, woods, and creek corridors collectively support a diverse arachnid assemblage. My own field notes include occasional records such as “A spider in Lick Creek Park” (June 10, 2007), but compared with the formal inventory these observations are sparse and mostly anecdotal.
Beetles and functional groups
Edward G.
