The entire background is a carpet of Sphagnum moss (peat moss), likely Sphagnum magellanicum (Magellan s Peat Moss) or a similar red-pigmented species common in Karelian bogs. Scattered across the moss are long, paired needles of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris).
