The central alley leading to the Arsenal Pavilion, a red-brick neo-Gothic structure designed by Adam Menelaws. Completed in 1834, the Arsenal resembles a medieval castle with crenellated towers and massive arched windows. It was originally built to house Nicholas I s vast collection of medieval arms and armor. The straight alley is a remnant of the formal layout from the earlier "Monbijou" pavilion that stood here, now framed by the mature trees of the surrounding landscape park. After severe damage in WWII, the building was restored and reopened in 2016 as a museum displaying imperial weaponry. This view from the Friendship Bridge captures the imposing Hermann Castle (also known as Narva Castle) standing guard on the banks of the Narva River. The dominant structure is the medieval fortress itself, distinguished by its 51-meter-tall Tall Hermann tower. This specific vantage point is historically and geopolitically significant. The river below serves as the border between Estonia (European Union/NATO) and Russia. The view is famous for being one of the only places in the world where two hostile fortresses--Hermann Castle and Russia s Ivangorod Fortress--stand directly opposite each other within musket shot distance.
