Ostrich Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) on Alpine Hill (or Alpinarium). Sterile Fronds (The "Feathers"): The large, outer leaves have turned from green to a golden-bronze color. These are the "ostrich feathers" that give the plant its name. They are withering now and will soon collapse for the winter. Fertile Fronds (The Dark Spikes): In the very center, there are the dark brown, stiff, upright spikes. These are the spore-bearing fronds (sporophylls). Unlike the leafy outer fronds, these become woody and persist standing upright through the entire winter, often poking out through the snow. The textural complexity of the park s planting, which moves beyond simple color contrast. The towering, evergreen spruces (likely Norway spruce) act as dark, architectural columns that anchor the scene, breaking up the horizontal sweep of the deciduous canopy. Their deep, somber green provides a necessary counterpoint to the "burning" oranges and yellows of the maples and birches, preventing the scene from becoming visually flat. This cross-section of a Tomatillo (Mexican husk tomato, Physalis philadelphica) reveals its internal structure under two different lighting conditions. Top Image (Visible Light): The fruit is a two-carpellate berry, which means it is divided into two main internal chambers (locules) filled with seeds. One can see the fleshy placenta in the center where the small, flat, yellowish seeds are attached. The entire fruit is enclosed in a papery, green husk (calyx) that has expanded to cover the berry as it matured. Bottom Image (UV Fluorescence): Under ultraviolet light, the tomatillo displays a striking fluorescence. The bluish-white glow in the center is likely due to phenolic compounds or other metabolites common in plant tissues that fluoresce under UV. The outer ring glows a distinct orange-red. Spotted leaves of Chinese Tallow exhibiting a phenomenon known as the "green island" effect. The infection sites produce or retain cytokinins (plant hormones) that keep the chlorophyll active in that specific spot.
